Weekly economic updates

The Weekly Economic Update (WEU) is published on Fridays and summarises key economic data (eg, share market data, GDP and CPI inflation) for the week from sectors such as retail, manufacturing, housing, and international trade. It also summarises financial market reaction to these data releases.

The Treasury will publish WEUs alongside its Monthly Economic Indicators (MEI). A typical month will have four WEUs. However, this may vary from month to month. The publication of the MEI means there will generally be no WEU released at the end of each month.

From 14 April 2020 the WEU has been expanded to include key high-frequency indicators that can provide more context on the current economic situation. The indicators presented in the WEU are a subset of those presented in the companion “COVID-19 Economic Dashboard”, also published each Friday. From 31 July 2020 the COVID-19 Economic Dashboard is included as part of the WEU.

Most of the material in the WEU will be similar to that in the MEI. However, should differences occur, the MEI analysis should be used.
