Changes in product mix important part of dynamic export sector

New research into the behaviour of New Zealand exporters finds that the change in product mix is widespread and frequent across many sectors, suggesting that New Zealand exporters are dynamic and respond quickly to changes in market conditions.

This research is outlined in a new Treasury Working Paper that analyses New Zealand exporting firms' product mix changes over time and how that relates to firm characteristics.

The Working Paper, "Multi-Product Exporters and Product Turnover Behaviour of New Zealand Exporters" by Muge Adalet, highlights the importance of analysing and gaining more insights into the behaviour of exporting firms, especially for a small open economy like New Zealand. The paper concludes that not only firm attributes but also product characteristics are an important element of export decisions of firms.
