In July 2017 the Treasury released material relating to the Government's participation in the Open Government Partnership.
New Zealand joined the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2014 and prepares a National Action Plan every three years outlining the steps the Government is undertaking towards increasing public participation and transparency.
Open Budget#
Among other commitments, the New Zealand Government has made concrete commitments to make a difference to openness, transparency and accountability of the Budget, and to help foster greater public participation.
The Treasury is the lead agency for Commitment 1: Open Budget in the New Zealand Open Government Partnership National Action Plan 2016-18 (June 2017).
Milestone One - Stakeholder Research#
As part of this commitment the Treasury commissioned Colmar Brunton to seek the views of a number of its stakeholders and has published the resulting research here. As noted in the research New Zealand's fiscal reporting is considered one of the most transparent in the world (as evidenced by New Zealand's number one ranking in the 2015 Open Budget Survey), however potential improvements can still be explored. The research includes a number of recommendations (e.g. providing more historical data) which will be an important component of Budget design in the future.
