This document provides a guide to the Treasury’s role as steward of the institutional regime for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand – Te Pūtea Matua (the Reserve Bank). This regime provides for the Reserve Bank’s operational independence, while maintaining appropriate accountability and transparency.

Ensuring this regime remains fit for purpose is critical to ensuring the Reserve Bank continues to successfully perform in its role as New Zealand’s central bank and prudential regulator in line with the statutory objectives that have been set by Parliament.
