Overview of the Vote#
The Minister for Food Safety is responsible for appropriations in the Vote for the 2013/14 financial year covering the following:
- a total of nearly $54 million (62% of the Vote) for justifying and delivering assurances to consumers and overseas authorities regarding food compliance with legislation (primary, secondary and tertiary) and for overseas market access requirements, including approval and registration activities
- a total of nearly $5 million (6% of the Vote) for policy advice, legal analysis, and decision-making support regarding New Zealand's food regulatory framework and international arrangements
- a total of nearly $2 million (2% of the Vote) for providing information to consumers and industry about food safety and suitability issues, and opportunities to enable consumers to make appropriate food choices
- a total of over $5 million (6% of the Vote) for the investigation and response management of food-related events, complaints and suspected breaches of legislation, including the management of responses to food and food-related incidents and emergencies
- a total of nearly $20 million (22% of the Vote) for setting standards relating to the development, implementation, monitoring and review of food safety, suitability and production for industry, developing other tools in conjunction with industry to aid compliance, and accessing scientific evidence in support of those standards
- a total of just over $2 million (2% of the Vote) to support New Zealand's participation in joint food standards setting with Australia.
