The Government recently consulted on a proposal to embed a focus on wellbeing in the Public Finance Act 1989. Public submissions on the proposal closed on 12 October 2018.

About the discussion document

The Government’s discussion document, Embedding wellbeing in the Public Finance Act 1989, was released on 12 September 2018.

This Government is committed to using a broader framing to measure New Zealand’s progress, to develop and assess fiscal policy and support decision-making. This involves capturing and reporting against important facets of wellbeing for the environment, people and communities, alongside existing macroeconomic and fiscal indicators.

The discussion document outlines a proposal which will help achieve this by requiring every Government to draw a connection between its wellbeing objectives and its fiscal policy, and requiring the Treasury to report on wellbeing indicators, alongside macroeconomic and fiscal indicators.

Make a submission

The proposal to embed a focus on wellbeing in the Public Finance Act 1989 is now closed to public submissions. The Government is now considering the submissions as it develops its final proposal.
