The Long-Term Economic Outlook Following the Canterbury Earthquakes: How Does It Compare With Other Disasters?

Abstract

We empirically examine the long-run economic outlook for Christchurch in the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes. In this case, previous investigations of the long-term impact of similar events elsewhere point to some sobering possibilities that ought to be considered and their policy implications explored.

About Ilan Noy

Ilan is currently the Chair in Economics of Disasters at Victoria University, a position supported by EQC and MPI. Ilan arrived in Wellington in 2012, after spending a decade at the University of Hawaii. His research and teaching focuses on the economic aspects of natural hazards and disasters, and related topics in international, environmental, and development economics. He has a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a PhD in International Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
