The Spatial Planning Board governs the implementation of the Spatial Planning Act 2023 and has ongoing stewardship, oversight, and monitoring responsibility for the Act.
The Spatial Planning Board was preceded by the Strategic Planning Reform Board which was established in April 2021 to lead the development of new strategic planning legislation as part of the Government’s resource management reforms. In December 2022 Cabinet agreed to rename the Strategic Planning Reform Board the Spatial Planning Board and agreed to a new purpose for the board. These changes were given effect by Order in Council on 1 July 2023. The Spatial Planning Act was passed in August 2023.
