Overview of Treasury information, research and policy publications about education in New Zealand and Government expenditure on education.

The Treasury's Role

The Treasury provides advice to the Government on education policy including early childhood, compulsory and tertiary education, and industry training. It monitors and advises on the performance of Crown agencies in the education sector.

The advice provided by the Treasury focuses on how education policy can contribute to the Government’s goals for economic growth and sustainable fiscal policy. It encompasses issues such as looking at what policies will help maximise achievement in the education sector by making best use of all the resources devoted to education. The Treasury also provides Ministers with advice on the relative improvement in student achievement and tertiary providers’ research performance that may result from different policy options, and from investing resources in one area compared with another.

The Treasury liaises with the Ministry of Education on a daily basis. It also regularly liaises with other education agencies such as the Tertiary Education Commission, NZQA and the Education Review Office.
