Government proposes social housing transfer in Christchurch

Market sounding is under way until 3 February 2017 for the Government’s proposal to transfer up to 2500 social houses in Christchurch to community housing providers. 

To receive the Information Memorandum for the proposed transfer, you will need to register on the Government Electronic Tendering Service (GETS).  Register for GETS here.

The proposal is for a single transfer transaction of between 2000 to 2500 HNZ properties, mainly in Bryndwyr, Riccarton and Shirley, while Housing New Zealand would continue to own and manage up to 3900 properties in other areas of the city. 

The Government expects that any successful bidder will enter a 25-year contract with the Ministry of Social Development to provide housing places. The houses cannot be sold and must remain in use as social housing unless the Government agrees otherwise.

Any successful bidder will be a registered community housing provider with strong links to social service providers.

An information pack will be released to potential providers next month, and those interested will be invited to a Market Sounding session with Treasury early next year.
