2.2 Labour force participation
Changes in rates of labour force participation are also expected in the long term. Figure 3 shows Statistics New Zealand's projections of labour force participation rates for different age groups over the next 50 years.[4] Participation rates for females between the ages of 25 and 64 are expected to increase slightly over the next 20 years and then stabilise. A marked increase in participation rates for those aged 65 and over are projected. Hence better health outcomes are expected to be associated with prolonged labour market activity and increased life expectancy for individuals in these age groups.
