2  Data and caveats

2.1  Data overview

The IDI brings together data from across government agencies[3] in a secure and anonymised form, which is then made available to bona fide researchers under strict conditions. The data used in this study comes from a number of sources including: the Ministry of Social Development (benefit receipt, employment services, and CYF care and protection and youth justice), the Ministry of Education (schooling and tertiary participation, and education services), Inland Revenue (employment), and the Department of Corrections (custodial and community sentences)[4]. Datasets are provided to Statistics NZ by agencies, where they are linked at an individual level, before identifying information is removed and they are provided to researchers in the IDI environment.[5]
