Media Statement: Treasury to host renowned international economist

18 Sep 2012

The Treasury will host leading Indian economic commentator and highly regarded international speaker Dr Reuben Abraham at a seminar in Wellington next week, in collaboration with the India New Zealand Business Council.

Dr Abraham, Executive Director of the Centre for Emerging Markets Solutions at the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, will present a speech titled India's Economic Prospects and Place in the World Economy: Implications for small, open economies like New Zealand.

India is emerging as a major Asian power and economic hub. It is the world's 10th largest economy with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, and recorded real GDP growth of over 10% in 2010 and 7% in 2011.

"The Treasury holds an annual dialogue with the Indian Ministry of Finance to discuss economic issues facing both economies", Treasury Deputy Chief Executive Vicky Robertson said. "We are interested in stimulating debate about New Zealand's links with the rest of the world and awareness of the opportunities these hold for growing the New Zealand economy.

"For those with an interest in opportunities for New Zealand businesses in India, we are delighted to offer the chance to hear Dr Abraham speak about his extensive experience in innovation and knowledge of global economic developments, and on Indian economic and policy issues."

Dr Abraham was recently named to Wired Magazine's Smart List 2012: 50 People Who Will Change The World. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2009.

See the seminar's page on this website for Dr Abraham's biography and the timetable for the seminar India and New Zealand Economic Connections.
