Abstract
Regulatory agencies all across the world seem to stumble from failure to failure. New Zealand has its own cases of regulatory trouble in sectors as diverse as financial services, mining and building. In this engaging talk Hanzo van Beusekom will explore the challenges and dilemmas of regulation in practice. Questions he will address are:
Why is regulation in practice so hard to get right?
What dilemmas do international regulators wrestle with?
What steps can lawmakers and regulators take to improve?
Hanzo will draw from his personal experience as a financial regulator and his extensive experience in working with international regulators.
This talk will be relevant to lawmakers, regulators and staff engaging with or interested in regulatory agencies.
Bio
Hanzo van Beusekom is research fellow at the ANZSOG and a partner at Clear Conduct. Clear Conduct is a specialized strategic consultancy that aims to improve the effectiveness of regulatory organizations Hanzo teaches on the organizations. practical aspects of regulation at the Free University of Amsterdam. Hanzo has been head of strategy and division head of Financial Enterprises at the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) In the past few years, he has been a guest lecturer at the Said Business School at Oxford University and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Hanzo is a member of the supervisory board of Oxfam Novib, a leading Dutch NGO aimed at poverty reduction. Hanzo studied Economics at the University of Amsterdam and holds a MBA degree with distinction from INSEAD, France.
