In March 2005 the Treasury released a letter from the Secretary of the Treasury's to the Chairperson of the Finance and Expenditure Committee outlining the process that Treasury adopted for contracting out the costings of political party tax policies.
Late in 2004 Parliament's Finance and Expenditure Committee commissioned the Treasury to estimate the fiscal costs of the tax policies of three political parties. The Treasury engaged the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research to carry out this work.
