New Models of Tertiary Education - Government Response to Productivity Commission Report

The Government has set out its plan for delivering a strong and effective tertiary education system through its formal response to the Productivity Commission report into tertiary education.

The Productivity Commission’s report, New models of tertiary education, was released in March 2017 and is the most extensive review of the sector in more than a decade. Government has taken this opportunity to set out a clear direction for work to safeguard a strong and effective sector in the face of rapid changes across our population, in our workplaces and through evolving technology. Government will focus on four key areas:

  • Creating a more student-centred system
  • Meeting the needs of industry through relevant, responsive, and supportive teaching
  • Improving performance across the system
  • Enabling and encouraging innovative new models and providers.

While the Government made it clear early on that it would not be accepting the Commission's recommendation to reinstate student loan interest, this response now signals the Government’s approach to all 49 recommendations.

The Government will work with providers, employers, students and other stakeholders as it progresses the work. Engagement will begin soon, including through the development of a new Tertiary Education Strategy in 2018.
