What are the government's main areas of expenditure?
The three largest areas of government expenditure for the 2010/11 financial year were:
- Social security and welfare: $25.3 billion
- Economic and industrial services: $18.8 billion
- Health: $13.1 billion
These figures are taken from the Analysis of Expenses by Functional Classification in the Financial Statements of the Government of New Zealand for the Year Ended 30 June 2011.
