Overview of the Vote

The Minister for Primary Industries is responsible for appropriations in the Vote for the 2015/16 financial year covering:

  • just over $100 million (12% of the Vote) on the departmental output expenses for the development and implementation of policy advice
  • nearly $179 million (21% of the Vote) on departmental output expenses for border and domestic biosecurity risk management
  • nearly $73 million (8% of the Vote) on departmental output expenses for fisheries enforcement and monitoring, fisheries management, animal welfare education and enforcement, administration of grants and programmes, supporting and monitoring the growth of the aquaculture industry, and management of Crown forestry assets
  • just over $96 million (11% of the Vote) on non-departmental output expenses for purchasing forest management and wood production services from sector contractors for Crown forests, for the Crown's contribution to implementation of the National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Strategy, for climate change research, and for the operation of the NZ Walking Access Commission
  • nearly $136 million (16% of the Vote) for non-departmental other expenses, notably for the Primary Growth Partnership, a Government-industry initiative that invests in significant programmes of research and innovation to boost economic growth and sustainability across the primary sectors, and for settlement of the Crown's aquaculture new space obligations under the Maori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Act 2004
  • just over $174 million (20% of the Vote) for capital expenditure including nearly $100 million investment in Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd.

The Minister for Food Safety is responsible for appropriations in the Vote for the 2015/16 financial year covering a total of just over $103 million (12% of the Vote).

The Food Safety appropriations fund protecting consumers from food borne disease; maintaining and enhancing New Zealand's reputation as a trusted supplier of safe and suitable food; delivering assurances to consumers; responses to food related incidents; and development and implementation of food related standards.

Crown Revenue and Capital Receipts

The Ministry for Primary Industries expects to collect nearly $120 million of Crown revenue and capital receipts in 2015/16, including:

  • nearly $80 million for the sale of logs from Crown forests
  • just over $33 million in cost recoveries from the fishing industry
