How we will measure our performance

Core justice sector agencies are developing a justice sector performance report which will cover the sector's strategic priorities; effectiveness, efficiency, organisational performance; and sector key performance indicators (including youth justice). This report will provide comprehensive information to support the Better Public Services results. The report structure will be finalised by 30 June 2012, with an initial report released by the end of September. It will then provide detailed information every six months to the Justice Sector Leadership Board which is the Chief Executives of the Ministry of Justice, Department of Corrections and New Zealand Police.

As a first priority for joined-up work and enhanced measurement systems, focus has been on the criminal justice system. This is because of the level of complexity and connections - or ‘pipeline' of events - within this system. In this pipeline, a change in one part of the system has high flow-on impacts to individual outcomes, the demand for services, and cost in other parts of the system.
