Budgets of the New Zealand Government

An overview of the New Zealand government's Budget process and links to the most recent Budget documents as well as an archive of older Budgets.

The Treasury's Role

The Treasury helps in the preparation of the government's annual Budget by:

  • advising the Minister of Finance on Budget policy;
  • preparing the macroeconomic and fiscal forecasts;
  • compiling and processing budget initiative proposals from Vote Ministers; and
  • preparing budget documents such as the Estimates, the Budget Economic and Fiscal Update and the Fiscal Strategy Report.

Budget 2010

The Minister of Finance, Hon Bill English, has announced that Budget 2010 will be delivered on Thursday, 20 May 2010. Read the Minister's media statement on the Beehive website: Budget on May 20 will deliver growth, jobs (2 February 2010).

The Budget Policy Statement (BPS) 2010 was published on 15 December 2009 conjointly with the Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update 2009.

Budget 2009

Budget 2009 was delivered by the Hon Bill English, Minister of Finance on 28 May 2009 and Budget documents are available from the Budget 2009 home page.

The Budget Policy Statement 2009 was published on 18 December 2008.

Forecasts (Economic and Fiscal Updates)

The Treasury's forecasts for government finances and the New Zealand economy are published at least twice a year in Budget documents called Economic and Fiscal Updates (EFUs).
