Macroeconomic Group

Peter Bushnell is a Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and manager of the Macroeconomic Group.
The Treasury is the Government’s lead advisor on macroeconomic and fiscal policy, and this Treasury group helps ensure a stable and sustainable economy through engagement based on the dissemination of information on the country’s overall fiscal position.
The group prepares macroeconomic and tax forecasts, monitors the economic situation and provides advice on macroeconomic policy, particularly fiscal policy. It is also responsible for preparing the Budget for the Government.
This work broadly reflects the goals outlined in the Treasury’s Macroeconomic Stability outcome, one of three Treasury outcomes that support government goals and where the Treasury’s contribution can make a positive impact on the lives of New Zealanders. However, staff in the Macroeconomic Group also undertake work relevant to all three outcomes.
